Founded in May 1849, the cemetery was the site of the first Memorial Day Celebration in 1866.

The Stephen D. Lee Home, located at 316 Seventh Street North, was completed in 1847 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Mississippi University for Women, also referred to as The W, was established in 1884. This tradition-rich college is famous for being the first state-supported institution dedicated to the purpose of educating the women of its time, but it has also been educating men since 1982.

The Rosenzweig Arts Center offers classes, performances, exhibits, and a sales gallery.
